Dirt visitor pad on ER 202 a few hundred metres below Madeira’s driveable summit. The radar dome and the 1818 m ridge sit in the windshield from the bays; at dawn the road to the top is a white thread on the hill. Compacted earth, sedan-easy if you stay off the soft verge, card payment, about five euros for twenty-four hours — half the upper lot. The summit P1 is seventy stalls and a one-hour circus at sunrise; this is the sit-pad. Packed from 5:30 with hikers walking up. After the last taxi the dome and the sea of cloud are yours from the car.
