The square is home to the Royal Opera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Swedish_Opera), the Swedish State Department, Arvfurstens palats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arvfurstens_palats) (housing the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_for_Foreign_Affairs_%28Sweden%29)) and the Ministry of Defence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Defence_%28Sweden%29). South of the square are the Parliament (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliament_of_Sweden) on Helgeandsholmen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helgeandsholmen) and the Royal Palace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_Palace) in Stockholm Old Town (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamla_stan). In the middle of the square there is a statue of Gustav II Adolf, which was erected in 1796 by the French sculptor Pierre l'Archevêque.
