The offices of the King, the other members of the Swedish Royal Family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Royal_Family), and the offices of the Royal Court of Sweden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Court_of_Sweden) are located here. The palace is used for representative purposes by the King whilst performing his duties as the head of state. The first building on this site was a fortress with a core tower built in the 13th century by Birger Jarl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birger_Jarl) to defend Lake Mälaren (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_M%C3%A4laren). The fortress grew to a palace, named Tre Kronor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tre_kronor_%28castle%29) ("Three Crowns") after the core towers' spire. The palace is built of brick, with midsections of the west, south, and east façades covered by sandstone. The roof slopes slightly inwards. The roof is covered with copper and is surrounded by a stone balustrade which is stretched around the entire main building.
