Both slopes connects the street Österlånggatan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96sterl%C3%A5nggatan) west up to the small Köpmantorget (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6pmantorget) and the street Köpmangatan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6pmangatan). Since the foundation of the city the slopes reflects the original inclination treadled by the city's first inhabitants. Seemingly inexplicable, the northern slope was referred to as Fiskestrandsbrinken ("Fishing Shore Slope") during the Middle Ages, a mystery however dissolved by the fact the area east of the slopes, between the alleys Nygränd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nygr%C3%A4nd) and Brunnsgränd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunnsgr%C3%A4nd), used to be the city's main fishing market Fiskaretorget (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiskaretorget) until 1520. The statue of St George and his princess is replica from 1912 of the medieval original in the cathedral Storkyrkan.
