Official asphalt visitor loop at the Haleakalā crater rim, 2,974 m on Crater Road. The cinder cones and the sea of clouds sit in the windshield from the stalls; Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa float on the horizon when the deck breaks. Sedan pavement, fifty-four marked bays, toilets in the stone visitor center, a Tesla Supercharger in Kahului about an hour and a half down the mountain. Sunrise reservations pack the pad from three in the morning; after the last sunset car the crater is yours from the seat. Thin air, often near freezing, wind on the rim.
